The Skin Barrier: Why It Is the Foundation of Every Great Skincare Routine

You cannot build a great skincare routine on a broken foundation.

In fifteen years of working with clients' skin — first in my salon, now at VELPEPTIDE™ — the single most common problem I see is a compromised skin barrier. It is the root cause of sensitivity, dryness, breakouts, and accelerated aging. And it is almost always caused by over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, or using too many actives at once.

What Is the Skin Barrier?

The skin barrier — technically the stratum corneum — is the outermost layer of the skin. It is often described as a 'brick wall': skin cells (corneocytes) are the bricks, and a lipid matrix of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids is the mortar. When this structure is intact, it keeps moisture in and irritants out. When it is damaged, moisture escapes and irritants penetrate — causing the cascade of problems that most people attribute to 'sensitive skin.'

Most 'sensitive skin' is not a skin type. It is a damaged barrier. Repair the barrier, and the sensitivity disappears.

How to Repair a Damaged Barrier

  • Stop over-cleansing: one gentle cleanse in the evening is sufficient for most people. Morning rinsing with water is enough.
  • Pause exfoliation: if your barrier is compromised, stop all exfoliants (acids, retinol, physical scrubs) for 2–4 weeks.
  • Layer ceramides: ceramide-rich moisturizers (like CU GLOW™ Moisturizing Cream) directly replenish the lipid matrix.
  • Add squalane: squalane mimics the skin's own sebum and is the most effective emollient for barrier repair.
  • Protect with SPF: UV damage is the number one external cause of barrier degradation.

The CU GLOW™ Moisturizing Face Cream was specifically formulated with barrier repair as its primary function — 4% ceramide NP, 8% squalane, and copper peptide to accelerate cellular repair. It is the product I recommend to every client whose skin is reactive, tight, or chronically dehydrated.
